Summary: World Environment Day was celebrated with expert talks, a plantation drive, and a photography competition to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
Murkong Selek College celebrated World Environment Day with great enthusiasm through a series of awareness and outreach activities aimed at promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development. The programme was organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, the Department of Botany, and the NSS Unit.
The programme commenced with inaugural addresses by Dr. Dipok Kumar Doley, Principal, Dr. Atul Hazarika, Vice-Principal, and Mr. Mahim Chandra Payeng, Coordinator, IQAC, who emphasized the importance of environmental awareness, sustainable practices, and the collective responsibility of educational institutions in fostering ecological consciousness among students and society.
The celebration featured a special lecture by Shri Tukheswar Miri Agarwalla, a prominent retired teacher, environmentalist, and social worker from Jonai in the Dhemaji district of Assam. In his inspiring address, he emphasized the importance of protecting natural resources, preserving biodiversity, and adopting environmentally sustainable lifestyles. He encouraged students to actively participate in environmental conservation initiatives and contribute towards building a greener and more sustainable future.
An informative presentation was delivered by Dr. Adit Shah, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Murkong Selek College, who discussed contemporary environmental challenges such as climate change, pollution, and ecological degradation. He highlighted the role of scientific knowledge, innovation, and responsible citizenship in addressing environmental issues and achieving sustainable development goals.
As part of the celebration, a plantation drive was organized within the college campus. Faculty members, students, and guests enthusiastically participated in planting saplings of various indigenous species, demonstrating their commitment to environmental stewardship and biodiversity conservation.
To commemorate the occasion, a Photography Competition was organized on the theme “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.” The competition encouraged participants to creatively capture the beauty of nature and convey meaningful messages related to environmental protection. The results of the competition were announced during the programme, and the winners were felicitated for their outstanding entries.
The celebration concluded with a collective pledge to adopt eco-friendly practices and work towards preserving the environment for future generations. The event successfully fostered environmental awareness among participants and reflected Murkong Selek College’s commitment to promoting sustainability, biodiversity conservation, and ecological responsibility.
