Murkong Selek College, located in the Jonai Co-District of Assam near the border of Arunachal Pradesh, is the premier institution of higher education in this rural and tribal region. Established in 1984, it was the first college in Jonai, founded through the collective efforts and vision of the local people to promote higher education in an educationally backward area.
Jonai Sub-Division, created in 1979 from the erstwhile Murkong Selek area, has played a crucial role in shaping the region's identity. With a population of around two lakhs, predominantly from the Mising community, the establishment of the college significantly contributed to educational and social upliftment. In 2023, Jonai was upgraded to a Co-District, enhancing its administrative importance and developmental scope.
From modest beginnings, the college has grown into a well-established institution with a 15-acre campus, modern infrastructure, and a conducive academic environment. It is affiliated with Dibrugarh University and was recognized under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act in 1999. The college offers undergraduate programs in various disciplines along with distance education courses under Dibrugarh University and Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University.
With facilities such as a well-equipped library, digital classrooms, internet access, sports infrastructure, and student amenities, the college supports both academic and holistic development. Accredited by NAAC with a 'C' grade in 2015, it currently serves more than 1000 students as a co-educational institution.

The name "Murkong Selek" originates from the Mising language, where 'Murkong' means money or silver and 'Selek' refers to land covered with thatching grass or reeds. Local folklore connects the name to scattered coins left behind during historical invasions, symbolizing prosperity and cultural heritage.
Established in 1984 through public initiative, Murkong Selek College emerged as the first college in Jonai and became a major force in expanding access to higher education in the region. Its history is deeply connected with the aspirations of the people of Jonai and neighbouring rural, tribal, and riverine communities.
