Department Profile

About the Department

The Department of Zoology is dedicated to imparting quality education in animal sciences, especially molecular entomology, cancer biology, natural product chemistry for supporting quality of life, molecular genetics, toxicology, nanobiotechnology, environmental science, and ecology with agro-forestry through a balanced integration of theoretical knowledge, laboratory training, field-based learning, and community engagement. The department aims to nurture scientific curiosity, environmental awareness, and research aptitude among students while promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

The department actively encourages experiential learning through ecological surveys, biodiversity documentation, field excursions, internships, seminars, workshops, and outreach programmes. The department is also open to industry-academia collaborations to facilitate meaningful transition. Through innovative teaching and practical exposure, the department prepares students for higher studies, research, entrepreneurship, and diverse career opportunities in life sciences.

Departmental Facilities

The Department is equipped with laboratory and field-based facilities that support undergraduate teaching, practical training, and student research activities.

Laboratory Facilities: Compound microscopes, simple microscopes, dissecting microscopes, microtome machine, spectrophotometer, colorimeter, pH meter, centrifuge, incubator, hot plate, magnetic stirrer, vortex mixer, hot air oven, double distilled water plant, digital weighing balances, chemicals, and glassware sets.

Teaching and Learning Resources: Live animal models, biomolecules models, human physiology and endocrinology models, human skeleton model, museum specimens, charts and demonstration materials, manual projection facilities, and field survey equipment.

Departmental MoU

The Department has established an academic collaboration with Balipara Tract & Frontier Foundation (BTFF) with effect from 18 June 2026 to promote experiential learning, biodiversity conservation, field-based training, internships, and community engagement activities.

The department is also working towards further collaborations and MoUs with academic institutes, reputed laboratories, and industries.

Academic Activities: Classroom teaching and laboratory practical sessions, student seminars and presentations, career counselling and mentoring, and hands-on training programmes.

Field-Based Activities: Biodiversity documentation, ecosystem assessment, wildlife observation, bird watching and identification, GPS-based ecological surveys, and environmental monitoring activities.

Extension and Outreach Programmes: World Environment Day celebrations, Wildlife Week observance, biodiversity awareness campaigns, and community-based environmental programmes.

Internship and Community Engagement: Summer internship programmes, biodiversity conservation activities, community-based ecological surveys, and field exposure and experiential learning programmes.
